Kerry
Chester, Greg Morgan and Tracy Longstreth had been playing for several
years, in and around the Newport Beach area, as the Kerry Chester Trio
when, in 2002, they adopted the name,
Chesterfield
Blues and started doing a Sunday afternoon gig at the end of the
Newport
Pier. They played there for three years and built a following of fans
and friends who would show up every week to hear their groove-oriented
music and the classic gems that began to define the band as a favorite
of the Blues and Classic Rock crowd. Surrounded by the cool, blue
Pacific Ocean
, this weekly gig was a cosmic beginning that gave birth to a full time
schedule for the band. Soon,
Chesterfield
Blues was performing up and down the coast at clubs and restaurants, as
well as parties and special events. In 2004, they landed at the Village
Inn on
Balboa
Island
and played there on Fridays for four years.
Kerry
Chester (keyboards, key bass & vocals), Greg Morgan (guitar &
vocals) and Tracy Longstreth (drums & vocals) play as a trio in
nightclubs. The band also performs as a four-piece, with tried-and-true
Blues vocalist Chris Whynaught joining the group as their lead singer
for special events and concerts. Chris’s voice brings to mind the
Blues, Rock and Soul greats like Wilson Pickett, John Lee Hooker and Joe
Cocker, with his authentic, unmistakable growl and power. Chris also
plays the saxophone, which adds another dimension to the unique sound of
Chesterfield Blues. Combined with Kerry’s Hammond organ, Greg’s
chorused guitar and Tracy’s Rock/Jazz style of drumming, Chesterfield
Blues have a personality all their own and they’re a favorite of many
of the pro musicians in the area, who can be seen dropping by to sit in
with the band when they have a night off.
With
their high caliber musicianship and their extensive song list,
Chesterfield
Blues is the perfect entertainment for any occasion, night or day.
It’s
all about the Groove!
Kerry Chester was born in Los Angeles,
California. He sings and plays Hammond-style organ and keyboard bass.
Kerry recalls, "My
mother started me playing the Hammond organ when I was seven years old.
She was probably hoping someday I'd become a church organist."
Well,
that never came to pass, but Kerry did go on to become a professional musician
and has played for many years in the Gospel, Rock, Surf, and Blues circles.
Kerry began recording in studios
at age seventeen and playing music for a living at age nineteen. He has played
the Hammond organ on numerous records and hundreds of sessions. He has toured
with artists like Dick Dale and the Del Tones and has been a member
of the popular Southern California band, the Surftones for more than twenty years. He played guitar, keyboards and sang in
a band called the Ascenders, whose song, "Make My Own Rules" went to #19 on the radio in the 1980s. "It was great
driving into Hollywood that day. We heard our song on the car radio on the way
into town and then saw our faces 40-feet-tall on the billboard above Tower Records
on Sunset Blvd... what a rush!"
Kerry loves to surf whenever he can,
riding his longboard. "There's a spiritual connection you
get from surfing", he says. "It's the same with playing and writing music. God gave me a
talent and I'm just trying to use it to share the love. It's all about the
audience. If one person out there gets taken away from their problems for a
couple of hours, then I've done my job. Music is an exchange. The musicians put
it out there, but it's how the listeners respond that inspires us to keep on keepin' on. It's a satisfying feeling when we get a good vibe back from the
crowd and to know that they really appreciate our music. That's why
'live' recordings have so much more energy, because the people pump
it up!"
